Six ways to pack orders so they arrive in one piece
Most damaged deliveries come down to packing. A few small habits make a big difference, especially for items going by motorbike.
When an order arrives damaged, it's usually because of how it was packed, not the ride. Bikes brake and bump over speed bumps, and it rains. Here's what the traders who get the fewest complaints do.
1. Pack for the road
Before you seal a package, give it a gentle shake. If you can hear anything moving, add paper, cloth or bubble wrap until nothing moves.
2. Double-bag anything that can leak
Cooking oil, juice, cosmetics and sauces go in a sealed bag inside another bag. If one leaks, the other catches it and the rest of the order stays clean.
3. Keep cakes and food flat and boxed
Use a firm box that fits the item well, and write "THIS WAY UP" on it. Tell the rider it's food when you hand it over.
4. Assume it will rain
A plastic outer layer costs very little and protects clothes, paper and electronics from a sudden downpour.
5. Label it clearly
Put your customer's name, phone number and estate or house number on the package, even if they're already in the app. It saves time at the gate.
6. Hand it over ready to go
Have the package sealed and labelled before the rider arrives. They're on the road sooner, and your customer gets their order sooner.
